The United States of America is arguably the most powerful and influential nation in the 21st century. With its massive military force that spans across the globe and the complex and powerful economic capabilities of American businesses, the United States dominates every aspect of worldly power. Yet, there is one field where the United States recently began to falter behind many other modern nations. This field is the education system. The halting and event the reversal of the progress of education will be detrimental to the future of the United States if the problems are not solved soon and continue to persist. Logically, one may be confused on the difference of education between public schools since they receive the same amount of funding. What truly influences schools is the quality of the socio-economics of the surrounding neighborhoods. For example, Troy High School, a school surrounded by a middle class neighborhood, is considered to many as a â€Å"good school† with â€Å"good students† while another school named Santa Ana High School, a school surrounded by families living in poverty and violent gangs is consid ered a â€Å"bad school† (Putnam 139-141). In this aper, I will discuss and explain the influence of religion and education on societies since the beginning of mankind. 1) Religion deals with almost all aspects of human life. 2) History cannot be taught in education without the mention of religious influences on civilizations. 3) The role of religion in public education is not limited to America alone, since the beginning of mankind every civilization has shown some type of evolution within their religious and educational institutions. There are several examples from different parts of the world to prove how widespread the problem is. ) All societies and civilizations are made up of individuals that belong to families. Families are the core of all societies and the religious choices of each family will society as a whole. 1) It may have influence in education, marriage, work, and even food. American religious education, as a kind of spiritual support, has been playing a supportive role in Americans outlook on life, the realization of life value, the shaping of personality, ethic concepts and national spirit. Its important role is manifested in the economic and political fields. Stallones, A recent survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed that fully eighty-four percent of Americans identify themselves as adherents ofa specific religion. Eighty-eight percent are absolutely or fairly certain of the existence of God or a universal spirit, including fifteen percent of self-identified atheists. Eighty-two percent of the population considers religion to be very or somewhat important in their lives, and seventy-five percent of Americans, including ten percent of atheists, prayed at least once per week. (p33) This demonstrates how religion is an important entity in the daily lives of many. This is because religions deal with the human life as a whole. For centuries people have searched for the meaning and truth of their own nature and the nature of the universe, religions are the result. We view religions as communities of people who share practices and beliefs, who gather together in special buildings to worship, and ho have a special way of living. More than three-quarters of the worlds population consider themselves members of some kind of religion. Religion influences almost all aspects of human life. It may have influence in education, marriage, work, and even food. ) The United States was founded on the principles of religion, the citizens of this country can practice whatever religion they like without being persecuted. The liberties provided under the Constitution allow individuals to practice their religious beliets openly and without Judgment. These beliets provide guidance and structure in the lives of these individuals. After the founding of the United States, although the Constitution clearly regulates secularism, rel igions in America are always closely intertwined with the process of American history, and play a huge impact on the political, economic, legal and cultural fields. American sociologist Richard Newhouse said, A basic fact about the United States is that Americans themselves claim that most of them are Christian and the moral foundations of American society are Jewish-Christian morality Just as non-Christian believe. There are several examples from different parts of the world to prove how idespread the problem is. American society is a blend of secularized and religious elements. Anderson (2004) noted that these two elements have always posed a dilemma for public education. The struggle is how to accommodate both of these societal characteristics. He pointed out that the secular nature of American public culture and its underlying pluralistic character are important aspects of the context for our system of education. England and Ireland Essay To understand this current situation, we will have to go back in history. There are three critical dates which lead to the situation today. Those dates are: 1170, 1609, and 1969. In the next paragraphs I will briefly explain what was going on in each of these years. To begin with, in 1170, Henry II ruled England. He attempted to attach Ireland to his kingdom. However, he only established control in a small area near Dublin known as the Pale. In that particular area, English citizens started moving in and adapting the English language, religion, practices, beliefs, and etc. Attempts were made to conquer the rest of Ireland, but major English expansion did not take place until the seventeenth century. In 1609, Queen Elizabeths army had established the English rule over most of the island of Ireland, with the exception of the Northern Province: Ulster. The Ulster clans (Lead by Hugh ONeil) had a very affective alliance against the English army. Unfortunately, after a long and damaging c ampaign, it was eventually brought under English control in 1703. By then, all the Irish leaders had left Ireland for Europe, and less than 5% of Ulster was controlled by Catholics Irish. Later on, in 1969, the restlessness in Northern Ireland really started. In this year, the minority demanded better job opportunities, accommodation, and rights for voting.In reaction to this, the British government introduced a new law which prohibited religious discrimination and cancelled the law of 1922. In reaction to that, in the 1970s, the IRA (Irish Republic Army) began their terrorist reactions. The problems in Northern Ireland are practically from the difference in religion. There are two main camps, the Unionists and the Republicans. The Unionists are Protestant Christians, and the Republicans are Catholic Christians. the shephard essays Throughout time there has been at least one constant that I am aware of. That constant is art. One particular piece of art stands out and catches the eye. That piece of art is The Shepherdess and Her Flock constructed and perfected by Jean Francois Millet. When one makes a certain judgment on a piece of art, one must be precise and certain about that judgment. When observing Millets piece I will take in to consideration three things to make my judgment: use of color, theme, and meaning. The Shepherdess and Her Flock catches the eye very quickly. The painting consists of a shepherdess tending to her sheep in some remote hills perhaps and most likely in Western Europe. The shepherdess herself is standing just a few paces ahead of her flock while they are all grouped together tightly apparently feeding. She is holding a staff while studying the ground. The look on her face makes her seem like she is disturbed for some unknown reason. The shepherdess is wearing many articles of clothing. Her first layer is blue and reaches down to her ankles. The next layer appears to be some kind of shawl. The shawl is cream colored and only reaches just past her waist. The final piece of clothing is red and only covers her head. The grass beneath the shepherdess, which covers the entire land, has bald spots and contains dandy lions giving it great character. This is the grass on which the flock is feeding on. Watching over the sheep is a shepherd dog stand just to the rig ht of the flock. The dog stands very proudly and has a great pride in his job. The sky in this work is covered entirely with clouds. The only bare spot in the sky is at the very top of the painting where the clouds begin to split. Millets work appears to be set early in the morning.
